Bankers could face 35 years in US jail

THREE ex-NatWest bankers could spend up to 35 years in a US jail if they are found guilty of defrauding their former employer, a court was told.

Gary Mulgrew, Giles Darby and David Bermingham are facing an extradition hearing under new legislation originally aimed at terror suspects.

US prosecutors have filed seven counts of fraud against them.

The three deny defrauding Greenwich NatWest out of Pounds 4.5m after they sold its share in a subsidiary of fallen energy giant Enron.

Giving evidence on behalf of the trio, expert witness Douglas McNabb said extra time would be added to their sentencing tally under US guidelines, because they would be considered not to have given themselves up immediately, despite their presence in a UK court. 'They are treated as fugitives and the US system does not care that they have voluntarily appeared here,' he added.

The hearing at Bow Street magistrates continues.
